Training Tips
Improve your volleyball game with tips from coaches and experienced players — from fundamentals to advanced techniques.
Hitting & Attacking
Approach Footwork
Master the 3-step (right-left-right for right-handers) or 4-step approach. Consistent footwork is the foundation of powerful attacking.
Arm Swing Mechanics
Draw your hitting arm back like a bow, contact the ball at full extension, and snap your wrist over the top for topspin.
Shot Selection
Read the block and hit around it. Practice line shots, cross-court angles, tips, and roll shots to keep defenders guessing.
Serving
Float Serve
Toss low and consistent, contact the ball with a firm wrist (no spin). A good float serve moves unpredictably through the air.
Jump Serve
Use your approach momentum. Toss high and in front, contact at the peak of your jump with an aggressive wrist snap for topspin.
Serve Placement
Target zones 1, 5, and 6. Serve to the seams between passers. Short serves can disrupt an offense just as much as power.
Defense & Digging
Ready Position
Low athletic stance, weight on the balls of your feet, arms out front. Be ready to move in any direction before the hitter contacts.
Reading the Hitter
Watch the hitter's approach angle and arm position. Where they face is usually where they hit. Position yourself early.
Platform Control
Angle your platform toward your target. Absorb hard-driven balls by giving with your arms. Keep your platform still on contact.
Setting
Hand Position
Form a triangle with your thumbs and index fingers above your forehead. Contact the ball with all 10 fingers simultaneously.
Footwork to the Ball
Beat the ball to your setting position. Square your hips to your target. Good sets start with good feet.
Deception
Keep your body position the same for every set. The best setters look like they're setting one direction and deliver another.
Mental Game
Next Play Mentality
Forget errors immediately. The next play is the most important one. Develop a short memory and a positive reset routine.
Communication
Call the ball early and loud. Communicate defensive assignments before every serve. Talk builds team trust and energy.
Visualization
Before serving or hitting, visualize the exact play you want to execute. Mental rehearsal improves consistency under pressure.
Conditioning
Vertical Jump Training
Plyometrics (box jumps, depth jumps) and strength training (squats, lunges) build the explosive power needed for blocking and hitting.
Agility & Footwork
Ladder drills, lateral shuffles, and reaction drills improve court movement speed. Quick feet win rallies.
Injury Prevention
Warm up thoroughly. Strengthen ankles and shoulders. Stretch after practice. Ankle braces and proper shoes reduce common volleyball injuries.
